Let's get deeper…
You might relate to those above difficulties, although it's also very common to feel unsure about what you are feeling, but you do know that something just doesn't feel quite right.
Or maybe you are aware of how you are feeling, but this feeling doesn't seem to line up with how you rationally think. Have you ever had a moment where you think:
'I know this is okay, but it really doesn't feel okay’
.
‘I know what I need to do, but I just can’t do it’
Something gets in the way of taking that alternative, preferred route.
We might describe this as a 'felt sense’, our felt sense and urges are telling us something very different to the facts of the situation, values or our long term goals. Although many people come to therapy to address their distress, this disconnect can be quite a confusing experience, and so people naturally also seek out a better understanding of themselves.
Part of my role is to help guide you through this: to find language for your experience, help you understand the disconnect between the way you sometimes think and feel, and over time create a felt sense that aligns with your beliefs. The more we understand ourselves, the more we can make active and intentional decisions that are genuine to who we are.
This might involve us unpacking the origins of certain behaviours or feelings you struggle with. This can be especially useful for people who have tried therapy before and felt that it didn’t quite reach the core of the issue, and problems continued to persist. To work through this, I utilise a type of therapy called schema therapy, which focuses on treating the cause not the symptoms.
So whether this is your first time at therapy or you’ve had past experiences, my goal is to meet you where you are at and work with you to get the most out of your sessions.
